Guadalupe, California
In its heyday, during the 1940s and early 1950s, Guadalupe was home to a burgeoning economy that manifested itself in multiple car dealerships, nightclubs and hotels which created a thriving business community that made it one of the fastest growing towns in Central California.
Since the designation of Highway 101 in the late 1950s, however, Guadalupe has seen a steady decline while its neighbor Santa Maria (which is located 9 miles east along Highway 101) has seen steady growth. Now Guadalupe is a ghost of its former self. The hotels are boarded up or used as migrant labor housing, there are no more bustling nightclubs and the dealerships selling the latest automobiles have long since closed their doors. This beautiful small town so rich in California history exists today almost as a memory.
